Chou Chou's Halloween

Chou Chou Briard had a busy day today. It started with a run around the park with her dog walker. Chou ran in her fairy wings, and found a fairy door in a tree.

Grass Valley Dog Show, With K9 Officer Rüdiger

Day Two of the Grass Valley Dog Show -- 1168 dogs and only one Briard. Just walking around the show was fun; Chou Chou got a lot of attention.

("Will somebody tell me why they took away my hair clip? I can't see anything!")

The Grass Valley Dog Show

This was Chou Chou's first show in more than a year. I am not trying to earn her championship; I just go for fun and because it's good socialization for her.

This is the first time she has entered the Grass Valley show, although she attended once before.

Chou Chou Has A New AKC Title

September 3, 2016, at the Grass Valley Dog Show, Chou Chou Briard tested for the Advanced Canine Good Citizen title (also known as Community Canine). She earned the CGC on her first birthday, but I haven't seen the test for Advanced CGC offered until now.

She had to pass 10 tasks; all involved being focused and obedient during distractions -- and at a dog show, there are a lot of distractions!

She took the test with 6 other dogs. She stood in line with them and waited her turn to perform each task. And she passed all 10.

So now she has a new AKC title, CGCA, added after her name, along with her Advanced Therapy Dog (THDA) title. Good work, Chou!

("I have earned 4 titles! But AKC drops the CGC and the THD from my name when I earn the advanced titles. So unfair!")

Chou Chou's New Neighbor

A new business just opened across the street from my house: Healthy Hounds Kitchen. They cook only for dogs! Chou Chou had to go and see.

A Trip Without Chou Chou

Chou Chou is sleeping. She doesn't know I am leaving for a few days. I will be gone 4 days, visiting family. Debbie is her long-time sitter who will care for her and sleep over each night. Everything will be fine, but I worry.

Chou Chou Briard Visits Old Friends

When Chou Chou was born, my mom lived here, at the Einstein Residence Center. Chou came from Canada to live with me, a special gift from my mom. So the pup visited here often. My mom loved to watch her grow.

Time For a Puppy Swim Date!

My friends have a pool. Chou Chou hasn't gone swimming in a long time. Would she remember? Would she still enjoy it?

A Puppy Needs A Personal Fan

Chou Chou loved this white drugstore fan. I bought it when she was a little puppy. The house is air conditioned, but she likes the breeze.

The fan broke: too much hair wrapped around the motor, and no way to open and clean it.  So now she has a new fan. ("Very fancy!")

Managing Chou Chou Briard's Hiatal Hernia

Why is Chou Chou on the staircase? ("I am waiting to eat!")

She was recently diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, a weakness in her esophagus that is causing GERD (reflux), especially at night. She gets burpy.

To help her, I have adapted her eating in several ways.

Diagnosis: Canine Hiatal Hernia

Back in December, Chou Chou woke up in the middle of the night distressed, burping, heavy panting, and lip licking. What followed was a long  path to diagnosis.

May: National Service Animal Eye Exams

Chou Chou had her annual eye exam today and her doctor gave her this bandana.

Every May, Board Certified American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists across the country volunteer their time  to provide free eye exams for service and therapy dogs.

A Birthday Party For Chou Chou Briard

Chou Chou is 5! ("What will we do for my birthday?")

Puppies grow up so fast! She came to me at 8 weeks old, after a flight from Canada to California, wearing a little yellow collar.

Herding Dogs and Fences

Chou Chou Briard is a herding dog. No sheep? No problem. She lives on a busy street near a park and lots of dogs walk by! And like any good herding dog, she tries to round them up.

Chou Chou's Cute Little Paws -- With Chewing Gum!

Chou Chou is up on her grooming table, lying quietly with her feet hanging off the edge, getting brushed. Don't her paws look cute and fluffy? This is after the gum was removed!

Let's Talk About Pet Insurance

Chou Chou hasn't completely recovered from her stomach problems, although she is improving with a new diet and some herbs from the holistic veterinarian.

She's had a lot of vet bills, and I am  grateful I have a pet insurance policy!

Chou Chou & the $2,000 Stomach Ache

One night, Chou Chou couldn't sleep; she was panting, smacking her lips, and burping. She was clearly very uncomfortable. ("Oui! My tummy was ouchy!") And when Chou Chou can't sleep, I can't either!

So off to the vet we went. That was 4 weeks ago.
